Nautical Twilight, 2015

  • Two digital image series in loop (16:9), two screens

  • Variable with installation

  • Daylight is digitally preserved on the shortest and longest day of the year. A programmed camera photographs the same white sheet of paper every minute with a constant setting. There is no adjustment to the changing light conditions. Aperture and exposure time are set to 12 noon. Twilight depends on the position of the sun and is defined as the transition between day and night. The photographs begin with the Nautical Dawn. The end of Nautical Dusk is the conclusion of the recordings. During this period, navigators measured the height of the stars above the horizon to determine their position.

The installation. Two monitors hanging next to each other repeatedly show a series of photos. One shows the longest day of the year, the other the shortest. The number of images depends on the length of the respective day, including nautical twilight.
